We own a 2013 Lagoon 400 S2 catamaran made in France. She is our first boat, having chartered a wide variety of sailboats extensively the last decade. We always thought that living in Arizona and Texas (far from the sea) made owning a boat impractical since we would use the boat so infrequently. So we waited until retirement to buy our dream boat and cut lines from our former lives…
We purchased Zoe in a whirlwind weekend in Tunisia (check out the blog post) and had her moved to our starting point in Croatia by a professional crew as we were still working for a bit longer. We chose the Lagoon 400 for it’s combination of full time livability, headroom for 6’3″ (2 meters) tall Dan and it’s proven capabilities for tradewind bluewater passages. It’s also the smallest catamaran we chartered that seemed like the best compromise for a live aboard couple dual handing a sailboat. Bigger can be better, but sailing loads, maneuvering in tight quarters, and purchase price plus ongoing costs increase exponentially with increased boat length. She seemed the perfect size, and after over two years of full time living aboard (across four sailing seasons) we are as convinced as ever she was the right choice.
