SUMMARY
Zoe is a 2013 Lagoon 400 S2 in the rare 3 cabin/ 2 head “Owners Version” with a three-owner history. She was designed by VPLP and built by French based Lagoon in 2013 as a 2014 model (with SD60 saildrives vs SD50). She is hull #336 and was shipped by cargo ship to Singapore for delivery to her first owner. She was sold three years later to an Australian who shipped her (again by cargo ship) to the Mediterranean in 2017. As the third owners, Zoe has been owned since 2018 by an American based couple who have sailed her in the coastal Mediterranean for seven summers (always stored on land for winter) and kept in top shape to be ready for another season of stress free sailing.
Zoe was delivered by the factory with a high level level of options (air conditioning, generator, electric winches, etc) and fitment and has since been extensively upgraded for “off grid, long distance sailing” capabilities. She is an excellent catamaran for short-handed offshore sailing, and is a safe and luxurious full time living platform. We have owned her for the last 7 years and have spent many months aboard exploring the Mediterranean, exiting the EU once per year to preserve her VAT unpaid Temporary Import status.
Zoe provides a “shore power at anchor” ease of off the grid living. An all electric galley (no worries about gas safety or propane refills) with new custom Corian counters for easy meal prep, a high output watermaker (rebuilt 2025) for guilt free showers and air conditioning (with reverse cycle heating) in each cabin and the salon ready for hot summer days. All systems (including A/C) can be run away from the dock off of the large battery bank, with a low hours (~1830) 7 KVA 220V Onan generator on standby with a Victron controlled remote auto start for cloudy days. A custom installed Starlink is also ready to provide broadband internet anywhere in the Mediterranean – and beyond.
With family commitments back home in America, she is for sale. Clean title is in hand, ready for transfer to next owner.
She is available to view as we transit from the Rome area of Italy to her reserved winter storage place on land in Bari Italy in October.
SAILPLAN
Zoe has a sail plan that enables her to sail well on most points of sail. This includes:
1) High power squaretop Mainsail: This is the original fully battened Incidence Dacron mainsail with 3 reefing points, the first two being single line (led to the helm) and the third requiring clipping on at the tack. Mainsail is stored in UV protective custom sailbag (new in 2017)
2) Genoa: This is the original Incidence Dacron furling Genoa on a new Facnor furler (2024)
3) Gennaker: 70 sq meter gennaker from SAS Technique Voile (new in 2017) on a Facnor FX 2500+ continuous line furler and attached to the bow sprit with a dedicated halyard. It is a fantastic sail for light winds from approximately 60 AWA to 160 AWA. It comes with a UV protected deck bag so when not in use, it can be dropped and stored in the deck bag on the trampoline or in the forepeak.
All sails were removed for inspection and service by a sailmaker in February 2024 and were verified to be in good condition apart from a couple of completed minor repairs to the mainsail and Genoa. Having spent so many years in the sailbag due to fickle winds in the Med (or removed and stored for winter) they have been lightly used.
Zoe makes for easy single handed sailing as halyards, sheets and reefing lines are led to the helm and controlled by 3 Harken 46 two speed electric winches plus an additional Harken 46 two speed gennaker sheet winch on the starboard side.
As part of our preparations for our Atlantic crossing, we replaced standing rigging in April 2024 at Port Navy Service in Port St Louis du Rhone. This included the shrouds and top and bottom diamonds. We have also replaced the main halyard, swapping out the original halyard for a dyneema halyard with custom end splice. We also replaced the topping lift, Genoa sheets, lazy jack lines, and mainsheet. A mast tricolor was added per ARC crossing requirements, which includes a switch selectable solar timed anchor light or distress strobe.
ENGINES and HULL
Zoe has been well maintained with low engine hours (approx 1650 hours) and the Yanmar engine maintenance schedule followed for the upgraded 39HP 3JH5E main engines and her pair of SD60 sail drives with low drag Flex-o-fold 17×3 folding props. All below waterline brass through hulls replaced with Trudesign composite in 2023. Coppercoat and an ultrasonic anti fouling system on her hulls makes for easy maintenance of anti fouling – no yearly haulout is needed just to re-apply expensive antifoul paint. Piranha P6 Nitro 12v underwater lights in 8 locations were installed in 2024. Yanmar SD60 saildrive boot gaskets and seals replaced in 2023.
Zoe’s two 200 liter fuel tanks (106 US gallons) can give a motoring range of over 1000nm (running one engine at a time at 1800rpm).
ELECTRONICS & COMMUNICATION
The boat is fitted with Raymarine electronics at the helm. The chart plotter is an E125W in excellent working condition and has the Mediterranean chart pack installed. The autopilot I70 control at the helm is connected to a Raymarine X30 smartpilot with a hydraulic Lecomble and Schmitt LS steering system. Wind, depth and boat speed displays are matching Raymarine i70s with new bezels and keypads installed in 2025. Speed and depth is determined by an Airmar DST800 (new 2019) connected via NMEA2000 backbone. The chartplotter is also connected via the backbone to a Quantum 4kw RD418HD radar and an AIS 650 (new 2017) transceiver for both monitoring and broadcasting of AIS signals.
At the navigation station in the salon, there is an i70 display for wind, depth and boat speed. There is also an ICOM IC-M323G w/GPS DSC VHF (new in 2017). For music there a Pioneer FM AM Radio with CD and Bluetooth at the nav station with speakers in the salon and the cockpit, controlled in two zones. Completing the nav station are controls for the Salon air conditioning and a desk with storage for charts and chart tools. Beneath the navigation station is an Oceansignal EPRIB. A handheld Cobra Marine HH500 VHF radio is also provided for use with the tender or at the helm.
The boat is fitted a Yacht Devices YDWG-02 NMEA data logger which logs position, speed and heading in addition to broadcasting AIS targets to Navionics on an iPhone or Ipad via wifi.
A Starlink Generation 3 flat dish (new 2024) has been installed and unobtrusively wired into the boat. The satellite dish is on a removable magnetic mount on the coach roof top so as to have an unobstructed view of the sky. We have used this with a “Roaming Package” that gives unlimited data within several miles of the coast with the ability to turn on “priority data” for access to the Starlink network from anywhere in the world, including ocean passages.
OFF GRID LIVING – POWER
We extensively outfitted Zoe for “Off Grid” living, as our desire was to sail to remote and far flung locations far from marinas.
In 2019 a 4 x 300w (1200w Total) Solar Array was installed on a custom stainless-steel structure at the back of the boat. In addition to being the primary source of power generation, it also extends the shade in the cockpit from rain and sun. The solar output is controlled by 2 Victron Energy 100/30 MPPT Controllers. Each pair is therefore independent, so if the boom shades one side on a point of sail, full charge will be maintained on the other side. This also provides a level of redundancy in the event of MPPT failure as 50% of charge will still be maintained.
All charging systems and power consumers are managed by a Victron Energy CCGX which has a display screen mounted near the navigation station for easy viewing of State of Charge and real time draw and charging.
There is a Victron Energy 5000w Quattro Charger/Inverter installed that runs the boats 220-volt supply and seamlessly interconnects shore power, battery or 7kw 220v onboard generator. The Quattro will automatically switch between shore/genset charging and battery in microseconds, which means items like computers etc will not reboot because there is no sign of power loss during switchover. The Quattro also has a large 220 amp 12v battery charging system which makes good use of generator output to minimize recharge times on cloudy days. In addition, through the PowerAssist feature, the max amount of shore power draw can be easily set where the system will draw any excess power needed from the onboard batteries while plugged into shore or running the generator. This prevents annoying dockside circuit breaker trips in marinas which often will have inadequate power.
In 2019, the factory AGM batteries were replaced with 2 x 300amp Victron Energy Smart Lithium Batteries. At the same time, a Victron BMS with Victron battery overcharge and over discharge protection switches were installed. Wires, fuses and switches were professionally upsized to handle the increased current capacity.
The power generated from the engine alternators is used to charge the Victron AGM start batteries and the house battery bank via 2 Victron Energy Orion 30 amp DC to DC Charge Controllers (one for each engine)
The all Victron integrated power management system works seamlessly between components and the Victron BMS controls all power going into and out of the batteries to ensure that they remain balanced and optimal.
For long runs of cloudy days or running of Air Conditioning for extended periods, an Onan 7kw Generator with low hours (approximately 1750) is on standby. The Victron system will autostart the Generator if system SOC is detected to be below an established threshold and then automatically turn the generator off once the desired charge level has been reached.
The large battery bank combined with a high power charging system allows cabin air conditioning to be run at night with batteries quietly providing power so as to not disturb people onboard or in the anchorage with the generator. In the morning, the generator will automatically fire up to recharge until the point where solar can take over again.
Our experience in the Med has shown the onboard solar array can be the sole source of off grid power production for days on end, with generator run time limited to very hot nights needing air conditioning or a run of cloudy days. Most cruising seasons we will put 20-30 hours of usage on the generator.
OFF GRID LIVING – WATER
The first owner installed a high output 220 Volt Echotec AML-900 watermaker in the bilges of the starboard hull. It produces 150 litres of reverse osmosis water per hour (39.6 US Gallons) through two DOW filmtec SW30-2540 membranes and draws about 1800w of power while in operation (easily handled by inverter and batteries). This brand watermaker is known for using off the shelf parts with no proprietary spares needed for ongoing operation.
With two of us living on board, running it every few days for 30-45 minutes is enough to keep the 600l (158 US Gallons) water tank topped up. Maintenance is very simple with only the 20 and 5-micron filters needing to be changed on occasion.
The watermaker had both membranes replaced along with a high pressure pump rebuild in 2025 and produces very high quality RO water.
In addition to the boats pressurized hot and cold-water system in the galley and heads, there is a hot and cold water transom shower, as well as a fresh or saltwater selectable deck wash pump.
ALL ELECTRIC GALLEY
The galley has a double sink with both pressurized hot and cold water. Below the galley sink is a drinking water filter plumbed into the cold water supply at the sink. The saltwater foot pump has been decommissioned and the saltwater faucet has been repurposed for use as a watermaker sample station to test water prior to switching output to onboard tanks.
Custom corian countertops were fabricated and installed in 2024. Custom sink covers were made to maximize counter area and the otherwise unused galley corner was repurposed into storage or room for trash bins, under a cover.
For cooking, there is a flush mounted four burner Whirlpool induction cooktop equipped with flex zones for griddle or other uses. Combined with a 220v oven, the galley is propane free for both safety and reduced need to search for propane in far flung locales. A 220V instantpot pressure cooker provides further flexibility in galley options. A 220V microwave with grill function is available for quick meal prep or warmup. A backup single burner induction stove is also provided.
There is a Cookout brand stainless steel BBQ installed on the stern on a custom stainless steel mount. Three campinggaz canisters are included, with two stowed in the propane locker in the cockpit and one at the grill.
We have one upright 130l Vitrifrigo 12v fridge freezer (new in 2023), one top loading Dometic 110L 12v fridge freezer and a 50L 12v/220v Dometic portable fridge freezer in the owners hull. This assortment of cold storage options allows for extended multi week provisioning for far flung cruising or storage of fresh fish caught while fishing.
The galley is also stocked with an array of pots, pans, cutlery, crockery, vacuum sealer, glasses, mugs, utensils, knives, fish filleting kit, chopping boards, blender, chopper, etc.
ACCOMMODATION AND HEADS
The salon has seating for several people as well as a table that can be dropped down using shorter legs to turn it into a further double bed. The cushion for this is stored in the port forepeak. There is plenty of storage under the salon seating as well as in an overhead cupboard and four drawers under counter. The salon also has custom UV shades for the outside salon windows to reduce heat loads in summer. Also in the salon, is the navigation station.
The port hull is home to aft and bow cabins, with one en-suite head with sink, shower and separate dry area for the Jabsco Quiet Flush electric toilet. The guest head has a 75 litre (25 gallon) holding tank with a gravity opening valve for discharge offshore and a pump out fitting on deck. Hoses were replaced in 2020. The holding tank has an ultrasonic tank monitoring sysme to indicate how full the holding tank is, greatly reducing the chances for a messy guest “mistake”.
The aft cabin has a queen size bed with under bed storage drawer and wardrobe. The ships power systems are installed under the port bunk. There are also two 12v 2 speed fans, reading lights and LED accent lighting.
The bow cabin is a double but with a removable section to make two singles if desired. There is a temporary storage cabinet installed that provides extra storage but limits the cabin to one single. The other single is stowed and available should the next owner want to revert to original.
Both guest cabins have dedicated cruisair air conditioning for maximum guest comfort.
The starboard hull is the “owners” side with a comfortable custom memory foam queen size bed and mattress topper. There are copious storage options with a table, cabinets and wardrobes. This hull includes a large head with walk in shower, sink and Jabsco electric quiet flush toilet with dedicated holding tank (with pompous fitting) and gravity drop valve managed offshore discharge. Hoses were replaced in 2020.
The owners cabin has a dedicated 12000 BTU Vitrifrigo air conditioning unit that was replaced in 2025 and is also fitted with a Flat screen TV with Roku streamer, two two speed 12 volt fans, LED accent lighting and two reading lights.
A Quick Boiler 40 litre (10.5 gallon) 220V/1200W water heater that supplies hot water is installed under the owners bunk. Water is heated either through the running of the starboard engine or using 220V power (inverter, generator or shore). The boilers heating element and anode was replaced in April 2024.
OFF GRID LIVING – WASHING MACHINE
Zoe has a Babynova 3kg washing machine on board that runs off the Victron Energy 5000w Inverter and uses water generated from the watermaker. It uses about 36l (9.5 Gallons) of water per load and can wash at temperatures from cold to 95c (203f). A 30-degree washing cycle takes about 90 minutes. The washing machine is installed unobtrusively in a cabinet in the owners hull.
MOORING AND ANCHORING
There are many mooring lines, dock springs and fenders on board for use when going into harbours and marinas. For anchoring, we replaced the original 25kg Lewmar Delta anchor with a 33kg (72lb) Rocna in 2018. This is connected to 70m (231ft) of 10mm galvanised chain. In addition to the chain, there is a further 30m (98ft) of rode. Doing the heavy lifting is a Quick 1000w Windlass which has a wired remote stowed in the anchor locker and also at the helm for single handed operation. Windlass is wired to house battery bank for maximum power availability. An reel with 50 meters of flat webbing style anchor line is mounted on the port stern pulpit for easy deployment when stern tying with long lines to shore.
The original 25kg Lewmar is stored for backup purposes in the anchor locker along with about 50 metres (164ft) of rode.
TENDER and OUTBOARD
In 2021, we replaced a 3.1m West Marine dinghy with a Highfield CL340. The 8 HP two stroke engine was upgraded to a 20HP Honda electric start four stroke in 2025 with the 8HP Mercury kept as a spare.
The tender has two benches for seating (and staying dry), a grapple anchor, foot pump and navigation lights stored in the seat bag. In the bow locker is the 12L (3.17 gallon) fuel tank securely stowed. There is an additional (empty) fuel tank stowed onboard Zoe if needed. UV protective tender chaps were custom made in 2024.
The tender is stored on the aft davits and is very quick to deploy and recover without the need for winches to raise the tender. If a winch is needed, there is a two speed winch dedicated for hoisting the dinghy on the port side. The stainless steel solar davit downtubes were designed to provide a handrail when embarking or disembarking the tender.
